CPA LICENSURE · CT

Connecticut

Verified. CARE checked this jurisdiction's requirements against an official or official-sourced page as of 2026-09-30. Requirements change — always confirm current details with the board before making a decision.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

To sit for the Exam: 120 credit hours. Effective October 1, 2025, Connecticut adopted three certification pathways: (1) a post-baccalaureate degree plus one year of general experience, (2) a bachelor's degree plus 30 credit hours plus one year of experience, or (3) a bachelor's degree plus two years of experience. Traditional licensing coursework calls for at least 36 semester hours in accounting and 30 in economics/business.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

General experience under the supervision of a CPA who has held an active license for at least three years; experience cannot be older than 10 years at the time of verification. Required duration (one or two years) depends on which of the three pathways above the candidate uses.

SEPARATE ETHICS EXAM REQUIRED?

Not yet independently verified by CARE — confirm with the board.

CAN YOU SIT FOR THE EXAM BEFORE FINISHING ALL EDUCATION?

Yes — candidates can typically sit for the Exam before finishing all coursework required for full licensure (e.g. at 120 semester hours, finishing the rest before licensure).

APPLICATION NOTES

Connecticut's three-pathway system (effective October 1, 2025) is one of the more flexible in the country — confirm which pathway's coursework specifics apply before finalizing an education plan.
